Happy New Month! Welcome to September, a time to prioritize our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Have you ever experienced constant headaches with no apparent cause? Sometimes, we need to take a break, reflect, and unwind.
Eating healthily is essential. It’s interesting how I quit eating meat at my age. I wish I had started earlier. Remember, avocado is not your enemy. And let’s not forget the importance of staying hydrated and drinking plenty of water, my friends.
As the memes circulate about the birthdays of legends in September, October, November, and December, I can’t help but wonder who declared us legends. Maybe it’s because their suffixes rhyme with “bar”? Anyway, this time of year often leads to spontaneous road trips, partying, and fun. You may set out to buy bread and end up embarking on a three-day adventure to places like Bor or Torit.
However, September is not just about having a good time. It is also a month dedicated to raising awareness for important causes. On September 10th, we observe World Suicide Prevention Day, shining a light on tough times, hopelessness, and the loneliness people battle with. But just like the anthem of Liverpool FC says, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Let’s prevent suicides by reaching out to others. A simple text saying “hi” or checking in on someone can make all the difference. We have all faced hardships, from heartbreak to loss or unemployment, moments when we felt like giving up. But we’ve managed to overcome and learn to live again. Today, let’s open up to someone and seek the help we need. The theme for this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day is “Creating Hope Through Action,” symbolized by the colors purple, turquoise, or teal ribbons. It’s a call to action, reminding us that there’s always a better alternative to suicide. Through our actions, we can encourage hope and strengthen prevention. Let’s be there for our friends and family, paying attention to signs of mental health struggles.
Another cause that deserves our awareness is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This genetic, hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive disorder silently affects women. Unfortunately, many women remain undiagnosed until they are 40, struggling with diabetes, weight issues or trying to conceive. This year’s theme for PCOS Awareness Month is “Empowered Patients, Better Outcomes,” represented by the color teal, which I recently discovered through my readings.
September is also Blood Cancer Awareness Month, with a focus on leukemia and lymphoma. The theme for this year is #ThisIsBloodCancer. Regular check-ups play a vital role in early detection of these types of cancer. Unlike other cancers, blood cancer often shows no outward symptoms. Raising awareness about blood cancer is crucial to ensure timely diagnosis and treatment.
On September 8th, we celebrate International Literacy Day, a day dedicated to addressing literacy problems in our communities. This year’s theme is “Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies.” The best thing about learning is that no one can ever take it away from you, unlike material possessions.
Lastly, on September 21st, we commemorate the International Day of Peace, observed worldwide with 24 hours of non-violence and ceasefire. Let’s celebrate the power of global solidarity in building a peaceful and sustainable world. The theme for this year is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #Global Goals.” It is a call to action, recognizing the impact of individual and collective efforts on promoting peace worldwide.
So, which of these days will you be commemorating this month? And to all my friends and family born in September, Joyeux anniversaire, Eid Milad Saeid, Happy Birthday, Heri ya kuzaliwa!
